Mexico City

I turned 40 this year and to celebrate, I went on a girls trip to Mexico City! It’s a place that had been on my travel wish list for a while, though I always imagined going as a family. Then a friend mentioned that she had never been to Mexico, and one conversation led to another until we decided to plan a long weekend in Mexico City. We packed a lot in, but I know we only scratched the surface of everything the city has to offer.

One of the best parts (and I’m sure you’ve heard this before) was the food. In some ways it feels like we just ate our way through Mexico City by trying new street foods, visiting delicious restaurants and indulging in too many sweet treats.

Aguachile is one of my favorite Mexican dishes (David and I had it for the first time on our trip to San Miguel de Allende) so I was excited to find it on so many menus during this trip. We made it to the famous Panaderia Rosetta for breakfast one morning- they are known for their guava roll and it did not disappoint. I also really enjoyed the chilaquiles there. We spent a lot of time walking around and exploring the city- and even visited one of the coolest libraries I've ever seen.

And we ate a lot of tacos. My favorite taco ended up being from a place we found randomly because it was raining and we didn’t want to go too far from the place we were staying - Taqueria El Califa. I ordered a Costra taco, which ended up being a flour tortilla filled with chicken pastor and on the outside was griddle oaxaca and gouda cheese. I cannot even explain how good it was, but I am still thinking about it!

One of the best things we did was a bike tour that took us outside of the usual tourist area. Our guides were awesome and knew so much about the city’s history, and we got to sample some amazing street food along the way. Although we ended up getting caught in the rain on our way back!

I also loved cooking tlapique (vegetables and cheese cooked inside of a corn husk, kind of like a tamale but without the masa) on a trajinera boat in Xochimilco, wandering through mercados and visiting the Frida Kahlo Museum.
